How often is respirator fit testing required?

An OSHA refresher on testing frequency and the events that trigger an immediate retest.

The Annual Rule

Under OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.134, fit testing must be conducted at least annually (every 12 months) for any employee required to wear a tight-fitting respirator.

There is no "grace period." If an employee's card expires on Tuesday, they cannot legally work in a required-respirator environment on Wednesday until they are retested.

Trigger Events for Immediate Retesting

You don't always get to wait 12 months. OSHA requires an immediate retest if any of the following occur:

1. Change in Respirator: If you switch the make, model, style, or size of the respirator the employee uses.

2. Physical Changes: Any physical change in the employee that could affect the facepiece seal. This includes:

* Significant weight fluctuation (loss or gain)

* Significant dental changes (like new dentures or missing teeth)

* Cosmetic surgery or facial scarring

3. Employee Request: If the employee reports that the fit is unacceptable, they must be allowed to select a different respirator and be retested.
