Qualitative Fit Testing (QLFT)

The standard pass/fail method used primarily for disposable N95 masks and half-face elastomeric respirators.

How it works

Qualitative testing relies on the user's senses (taste, smell, or irritation) to detect leakage around the respirator seal. A test agent is introduced while the user wears the mask inside a hood.

If the user can taste or smell the agent, the mask does not fit properly and fails the test.

Common Testing Agents

  • SaccharinA sweet-tasting aerosol
  • Bitrex (Denatonium Benzoate)A bitter-tasting aerosol
  • Isoamyl Acetate (IAA)A banana-smelling agent (requires specific cartridges)

When to use Qualitative Testing

Healthcare

Ideal for N95 and surgical masks used in hospitals and clinics.

General Industry

Perfect for half-mask elastomeric respirators filtering dust and particulates.

Large Volumes

The fastest method for testing large groups of employees efficiently.
